In my experience, if you talk to an average person about Bitcoin, then it is almost inevitable that they will say something like, “People who support Bitcoin are just trying to get rich quick.” Is this true? The short answer is that it doesn’t matter even if it is true. What I mean is that you can’t invalidate something just because of someone or some group’s motives. Why? Because that’s a fallacy.

Specifically, it’s an ad hominem fallacy. When you think of the ad hominem fallacy you think of someone calling you names instead of addressing your argument. But that’s not the only type of ad hominem fallacy.

If a car salesman has a motive to make money, that doesn’t mean the car itself doesn’t work. That’s a fallacy. In the same way, even if some Bitcoiners are looking to get rich quickly, that doesn’t mean Bitcoin isn’t legitimate.

But are Bitcoiners looking to get rich quickly?

At the same time, credibility matters. Therefore, it’s important to see whether Bitcoiners are trying to get rich quickly.
