Dave Ramsey is both right and wrong about credit cards
The situation is complex, but I hope to draw some conclusions regarding Dave Ramsey and credit cards.
Ramsey recommends people not use credit cards. While some people liken credits cards to a tool that’s “neutral”, Ramsey thinks credit cards are more akin to playing with snakes: it’s not as good idea and you’ll likely get bit.
In my personal experience, Ramsey seems to be mostly correct. For most people, credit cards don’t seem to be helping them overall. So why would you try? That’s where the other side of the argument comes in.
The other side of the argument says that some people are very disciplined and pay off their credit cards every month. They don’t lever themselves to the center of the earth.
It’s true that some people can handle credit cards well. If that’s you, great. If not and you are like a drunk, then you don’t even need to be thinking about having a credit card.
If you don’t know whether you should have a credit card, don’t just assume that you have to have one or that you have to try it out. Think for yourself, research for yourself, and be honest with yourself before making a decision.
So, is having a credit card more like owning a tool or more like playing with snakes? Well, yes…it’s both.
